The Truth Behind Levis

Jeans are the epitome of style, what is more popular? All over the world, if you sit at some public gathering and just track the hordes of men and women flocking to the doors, it is a sound wager that the large majority are wearing denim jeans. One of the easiest places to get these items is on wholesale apparel sites, but their history predates this technology by over a century. What brought us this item of clothing? The true history is not completely clear, but some essential facts are known.

The history dates back to Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis. Levi Strauss was an apparel wholesaler himself, although at that time his shop was not a website but a dry goods store in San Francisco. Jacob Davis was a clothes maker who bought some cloth from Strauss' wholesale apparel store and made some "riveted" overalls out of it, to be used by miners. The background gets a little less clear from there, but according to some versions, Davis contacted Strauss with the idea that they could start up as partners in patenting what were then known as "waist overalls.". Strauss agreed.

The original levis were apparently made out of either canvas or a sturdy fabric then known as denim. One version is that Strauss shipped fabric from France called "serge de Nimes" and the appellation got abbreviated as "denim;" but anotheer account is the deep blue cloth had been manufactured in America for awhile. The creative addition that Davis invented was the riveted fly front. The rivets were thencopper colored, just as the buttons are now. So Strauss became a Wholesale apparel manufacturer as well as vendor and soon, the organization became a success. Probably no apparel wholesaler nowadays, even with the speed and convenience of the Web, could claim as big a success story in the blink of an eye like that. Even the huge conflagration of 1906 did not bring the story to an end and the organization continued to expand long after Strauss and Jacobs died

Today, of course, the word "levi" is synonymous with jeans and every imaginable style is available at apparel wholesalers, department stores, thrift shops, boutiques and big box retailers. The button front levi with copper-colored buttons is still enormously popular, but so is the flare cut, high waist, loose straight - the list never stops. Hues have stayed true to the original blue, but now come with names like "stone washed". But the main features are the same: a good-looking pant.
