The history of Levis

Jeans are the height of fashion, who doesn't love them? All over the country, if you attend some public gathering and just track the hordes of folks going in and out, it is a sound wager that the large majority are dressed in jeans. One of the easiest places to get this popular pant is on wholesale apparel sites, but their history predates this technology by over a century. What is the history of the jean? The true history is not completely clear, but some facts are known.

The story goes back to Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis. Levi Strauss was an apparel wholesaler himself, although in the old days his shop was not a website but a dry goods store in San Francisco. Mr. Davis was a clothes maker who bought some cloth from Strauss' wholesale apparel store and sewed some "riveted" dungarees out of it, to be used by miners. The background gets a little less clear from there, but according to some versions, Davis got hold of Strauss with the proposition that they could become business partners in making what Mr. Davis was making. Strauss said yes.

The original levis were apparently made out of either canvas or a sturdy cloth then known as denim. Some say that Strauss got material from France called "serge de Nimes" and the appellation got abbreviated as "denim;" but anotheer account is the blue fabric had been manufactured in America for awhile. The new twist that Davis brought to the table was the riveted front closures. The rivets were originally made out of copper, just as the snaps are today. So Strauss became a Wholesale apparel manufacturer as well as vendor and in a short time, the organization took off. Likely no apparel wholesaler nowadays, even with the speed and convenience of the Internet, could show as spectacular a success in the blink of an eye like that. Even the fire of 1906 did not stop the company and the enterprise continued to be wildly successful long after Strauss and Jacobs passed their legacy on to their heirs

Now, of course, the word "levi" is synonymous with jeans and every imaginable style is available at apparel wholesalers, retail stores, thrift shops, boutiques and big box retailers. The buttons on the fly in front style levi with distinctive levi buttons is still hugely favored, but so is the flare cut, low rider, slim cut - the list could go on and on. Hues have stayed true to Levi's first blue, but now arrive with names like "stone washed". But the main features are the same: a sturdy trouser.
